Durham County Council Launches Local Plan Consultation on Housing and Transport

The timing aligns with other active public consultations run by local bodies. The Fire and Rescue Service for County Durham and Darlington is seeking input on its Community Risk Management Plan for 2026 to 2030, with responses due by May 13, 2026. A separate eight-week consultation on the draft Conservation Area Management Plan for Durham City heritage closes on April 13, 2026. These exercises run alongside the Local Plan work and address service planning and built environment management.
Resident input on council ambitions
More than 3,600 residents previously responded to an online consultation on a new council plan for County Durham. That plan sets out five ambitions: reforming the council, supercharging the economy, building better communities, caring for people and environmental stewardship. The responses were recorded as positive and provide a reference point for current engagement on services and economic priorities.
An earlier consultation on an outdoor gym proposal at the former Elvet bowling green produced inconclusive feedback. The site has since become a community garden. This outcome illustrates how resident comments shape specific local projects that relate to public space and recreation services.
Next steps for submissions
Feedback on the Local Plan consultation can be provided through the channels set out by Durham County Council. The outcomes are expected to inform updates to policies on housing, transport routes and service locations.
