Durham Schools Launch Mindfulness Programs to Boost Student Focus
Durham schools have rolled out structured mindfulness sessions this year to support student focus and emotional regulation.
How we reported this
Durham schools introduced mindfulness training for pupils starting in January 2026 at two sites along the Wear river corridor.
Mental health referrals for children in County Durham rose 22 percent between 2023 and 2025, according to NHS data released in March. Parents and teachers report that short daily breathing exercises help students manage exam pressure and screen fatigue. Local wellness groups have pushed for classroom integration rather than after-school add-ons.
Programs now running at two schools
Durham Johnston Comprehensive School on Crossgate Peth began a ten-week course in February for Year 7 and Year 8 groups. The sessions use the .b curriculum and run three mornings a week before first period in the main hall. St Leonard’s Catholic School on North Road launched its own pilot in March, open to all year groups and held in the library after lunch on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Both programs are free for enrolled students and supplied with printed workbooks paid for by a £4,800 grant from Durham County Council’s education budget.
Evidence and next steps
A Durham University evaluation of the first cohort at Johnston found average self-reported stress scores dropped from 6.8 to 4.9 on a ten-point scale after eight weeks. The same report recorded a 15 percent drop in late homework submissions among participating classes. Families who want to continue the practice at home can attend a free parent workshop at the Claypath Community Centre on 15 July at 6:30 p.m. Registration opens online through the council’s family services portal next week.
School staff plan to expand the sessions to Year 5 and Year 6 classes at Neville’s Cross Primary on Darlington Road in September. Teachers interested in leading groups can book the next two-day training course through the Durham Mindfulness Network, which meets at the Durham Cathedral education centre on Palace Green.
